One of the most rewarding aspect of our job is the ability to work with kids at any public meetings. Kids are innocent and ask all the right questions. “Where can I play?” It is a reminder that adults not the only users of the roadway network.
As part of the City of Atlantic Beach Complete Streets public meeting, DDEC in partnership with AE Engineering focused on the policy and high level education. Through a preliminary survey, the project team found that 90% of people does not know that the City of has a adopted a complete streets policy.
We start with the simplest of all questions. Where do you want to walk? Where do you want to bike? Streets with no sidewalk or bike lanes, kids are forced to play in the streets. How can we change the built environment so kids will feel safe enough to use the system. DDEC has created a complete streets puzzle to generate a narrative on complete streets and help many residents realized that their streets is not complete.
