New mobility modes and services in cities are changing how we live, work and travel. From high-speed rail and scooters to bike share and ride-hailing apps (to name just a few), it seems there are more alternative transportation options from which to choose than ever! FUN options, which are also convenient and innovative, are transforming neighborhoods, which, in turn, are becoming more equitable, healthy, and sustainable. This type of change within the built environment is a core focus of DDEC.
While studies show that the U.S. commute is still dominated by cars, alternative modes are slowly becoming more popular. One initiative in Florida aims to put the ‘pedal to the metal to accelerate their adoption. Mobility Week, celebrated in the Sunshine State from October 21-28, 2022, is a cooperative effort by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and its partner agencies to promote awareness of safe, multimodal transportation choices. According to the FDOT website, “counties, cities and transportation agencies host events and offer special promotions to encourage Floridians to try new transportation options…. Mobility Week is also an opportunity for Floridians to explore how active and sustainable travel choices like walking, biking, riding transit, or carpooling reduce traffic congestion, benefit the environment, and improve community health.”
This Mobility Week, consider a new way to travel around your community. Host or attend one of many organized events throughout the state. It just might move you!
