Vision Zero Community Bicycle Ride through Opa-locka
On Wednesday, May 2nd, the City of Opa-locka hosted a lively community event focused on bicycle safety and promoting the city’s Vision Zero Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The event was coordinated by transportation consulting firm EXP, with support from DDEC.
The festivities kicked off at 4 p.m. at the Opa-locka Municipal Complex with the distribution of free bicycles and helmets to attendees. This was followed by a community bike ride around the neighborhood led by cycling ambassadors.
Free Bicycle Helmets were Distributed to Attendees
After working up an appetite on the ride, participants enjoyed a screening of the inspirational film “Together We Cycle.” The film celebrates the power of cycling to bring people together and transform communities.
Next up were a couple of informative presentations. Representatives from the Dutch Cycling Embassy gave an overview on creating safe and cyclist-friendly infrastructure using the “Safe System” approach to active mobility planning. There was also a presentation highlighting the benefits of integrating cycling with public transit.
Jesus Fuentes, PE Presents to the Group
The event wrapped up with small group workshop sessions where residents could provide input and suggestions to help guide Opa-locka’s efforts around Vision Zero and safer streets for all road users, especially vulnerable cyclists and pedestrians.
By combining education, community-building activities, and visionary planning, this event represented an important step in Opa-locka’s development of its Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. Kudos to all involved and all who participated in pedaling towards a safer, more sustainable future!
