Thanksgiving Travel 2023: Tips for Staying Safe on the Road

DELRAY BEACH, Fla (November 16, 2023) – With Thanksgiving just around the corner, millions of Americans are gearing up to hit the road and travel home for the holidays. This year, AAA predicts that 54.6 million people will travel 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving, with the vast majority (49 million) traveling by car.

All those extra vehicles on the road mean increased congestion and potential hazards. Here are some tips from your DDEC transportation engineering experts on how to stay safe if driving this Thanksgiving:

  • Leave early. Give yourself plenty of extra time to reach your destination. The day before Thanksgiving tends to be the most congested, so avoid hitting the road during peak drive times.
  • Prepare your vehicle. Get your car serviced and check the tire pressure, windshield wipers, fluids, and lights before departing. Having a roadside emergency kit on hand is also a good precaution.
  • Avoid distractions. Don’t use your cell phone while driving, as distracted driving significantly increases the risk of an accident. Have passengers help navigate.
  • Watch speed limits. Speeding is always unsafe but be mindful in heavy holiday traffic and poor weather conditions.
  • Take breaks. Don’t push yourself to drive for too many hours in a row. Stop regularly to rest, stretch your legs, eat a snack, and refocus.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Make alternate arrangements if you plan to consume alcohol at your Thanksgiving celebrations. There are many rideshare options available nowadays.

For those traveling by other modes, AAA predicts 1.4 million travelers will opt for air travel this Thanksgiving, while 1.5 million are expected to take trips by bus, cruise ship, or train. These options allow you to avoid driving and relax during your holiday journey.

Whichever way you get there, play it safe, be patient with increased congestion, and focus on having a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration with family and friends. From all of us here at DDEC, we wish you and yours a very happy holiday!
