Walk To School Day – City of West Palm Beach

This year for Walk to School Day, DDEC volunteered our efforts to organized a fun walk with the City of West Palm Beach and Northboro Elementary School. We had an internal stakeholder meeting with City Engineering staff, the WPB Police and other City Staff to gain interest in walk to school. This is the first year that kids are required to be back in person in Palm Beach County coming out of COVID19. This was an opportunity for us to engage the community on two key points: 1) It is fun and healthy to walk to school with friends 2) Identify basic missing infrastructures such as missing links of sidewalks.

We were blessed with beautiful weather and support from the City of West Palm Beach leadership. I’m very thankful for volunteering efforts from my friend Meredith with the Moore Agency to help us with media alert and communication. We met at the Boys and Girls Club on the West side of the road and walked approximately 1/2 mile to Northboro Elementary School. The kids were so excited to be among friends, neighbors and community leaders. WPB Police Department escorted the group so everyone can walk comfortably down the middle of the street and cross a state route, Broadway Avenue.

We were welcomed at the school entrance with the Vice Principal of Northboro Elementary School and other parents. It was a rewarding effort to participated in this event. DDEC continue to support local communities through organized events to emphasize on safety and mobility of neighborhoods. We can’t wait to be able to do this again next year!
