The DDEC team recently participated in a Vision Zero Action Plan workshop with the City of Delray Beach, bringing together agency partners, technical stakeholders, and community representatives to advance a shared goal: eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries.

Vision Zero is a data-driven approach to transportation safety that prioritizes proactive design, policy, and community engagement. As part of this effort, the workshop focused on reviewing existing conditions, identifying key safety challenges, and discussing potential strategies to create safer, more accessible streets throughout Delray Beach.

A Collaborative Approach to Safety

The workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including transportation professionals, planners, and local agencies. Discussions centered around:

  • High-risk corridors and crash patterns
  • Pedestrian and bicycle safety concerns
  • Speed management and roadway design
  • Opportunities for quick-build improvements and long-term investments

By combining local knowledge with technical analysis, the group was able to identify priority areas where safety improvements can have the greatest impact.

Key Takeaways

Several themes emerged throughout the discussion:

  • Speed is a critical factor in many severe crashes, reinforcing the need for traffic calming and context-sensitive design
  • Intersections and crossings remain high-risk areas for vulnerable users
  • Data and community input must work together to guide solutions
  • Layered safety strategies—engineering, education, and enforcement—are essential

Looking Ahead

This workshop marks an important step in developing the Vision Zero Action Plan. The insights gathered will help shape targeted strategies and recommendations aimed at improving safety for all road users. DDEC is proud to support the City of Delray Beach in this effort and remains committed to advancing safer, more connected communities across South Florida.
