DELRAY BEACH, FLA (February 1, 2024) – Pedestrian safety, accessibility, and comfort were the focus of an evaluation aimed at informing decisions about future improvements to pedestrian infrastructure in West Palm Beach’s North End. The audit was conducted by Palm Beach County traffic and transportation engineering firm DDEC on behalf of the City of West Palm Beach. DDEC is a traffic and transportation engineering firm that helps local governments achieve their transportation goals through the creation of connected, safe, and equitable communities.

On Thursday, February 1, 2024, the DDEC Walkability Team, sub-consultant EXP, City employees, and invited community members of various ages, abilities, and backgrounds walked an approximate 2 miles-long stretch of sidewalk on Pinewood Avenue and Spruce Avenue in the City’s North End. Along the journey, they documented issues and connected with residents and business owners to identify potential improvements.

“A community’s walkability is critical to residents’ access to jobs, recreation, health, and overall quality of life,” said Uyen Dang, P.E. “We are grateful to the neighborhood participants who joined us for the walk audit and shared with us their experiences as we support the City of West Palm Beach in their continued effort to create a more walkable city.”

Future pedestrian improvements would enhance West Palm Beach’s strong walkability factor, which is important when evaluating cities and neighborhoods. Thanks to its pedestrian-friendly downtown, park system, and waterfront attractions, West Palm Beach has a favorable Walk Score of 77, according to Walk Scores, which analyzes population density and road metrics like block length and intersection density.
