Gearing Up for National Bike Month

May is National Bike Month – a full 31 days dedicated to celebrating the simple joy and many benefits of cycling. For those in Florida, however, the state’s Bicycle Month is observed in March. DDEC and our FloridaBicycleMonth.com team are fully in support!

Started back in 1956, National Bike Month is an opportunity for communities to encourage more people to give bike riding a try and experience the thrill and freedom of getting around on two wheels. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist logging miles every day or just getting back on a bike for the first time in years, there are plenty of great reasons to get involved this May.

The Health Benefits of Cycling

Let’s start with the obvious – cycling is an excellent form of exercise. Low impact but high cardio, a moderate pace on the bike can burn hundreds of calories per hour while strengthening your legs, core, and cardiovascular system. Studies show that regular cycling can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, depression, and even some forms of cancer. And it’s fun! A sunny bike ride feels like playtime rather than a workout.

Biking is Good for the Environment

Swapping four wheels for two is one of the easiest ways we can reduce our carbon footprint. Bikes produce zero emissions, making them a sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation. The more people who choose to bike instead of drive, even just once or twice a week, the less air pollution and greenhouse gases we’ll pump into the atmosphere.

It Saves You Money

With the high cost of gas and vehicle maintenance these days, cycling can provide some serious savings. It costs practically nothing to operate a bike, aside from the occasional tune-up. Many people have started bike commuting to save on gas money while getting some exercise on their way to work.

So, Let’s Celebrate!

Communities all across the country will be hosting bike-related events, group rides, safety workshops, and more throughout the month of May. This is a great opportunity to discover new trails and bike routes in your area, meet fellow cycling enthusiasts, and learn tips for safe riding. Check with your local bike
shops and cycling clubs to see what fun activities are planned for National Bike Month.

If you’ve never dusted off your old 10-speed or want to upgrade to a snazzy new road bike or mountain bike, swing by your local bike shop to get set up with the right ride and accessories. But no need to buy fancy gear – any kind of bike will do for short rides around the neighborhood or local park paths.

However you plan to celebrate, be sure to get out and enjoy at least one or two rides this May. Feel the wind in your hair, get those legs pumping, and embrace the pure cycling joy that made you fall in love with bikes as a kid. Who knows, you might just get hooked all over again!
