DDEC recently attended the 5th Annual Autonomous Vehicle Conference in Boca Raton, where transportation leaders, public agencies, regulators, and technology partners came together to discuss the future of autonomous transit and mobility innovation.
The conversation went well beyond the vehicle itself. Key topics included policy, governance, public trust, deployment readiness, workforce development, and live vehicle demonstrations. Together, these discussions reinforced an important point: successful mobility innovation depends on more than technology.
Autonomous transportation requires careful planning, safe operations, accessible service design, and a clear understanding of how new mobility tools can serve the community. For public agencies, that means asking practical questions early. Where does autonomous transit fit within the existing transportation network? How can it improve safety, access, and reliability? What policies, partnerships, and operational plans are needed before deployment?
As mobility technology continues to evolve, South Florida has an opportunity to shape these conversations in a way that is thoughtful, safety-focused, and community-centered.
It was encouraging to see transportation professionals, agencies, and technology leaders working through these questions together in our region.
