Back to School: Staying Safe in School Zones

As the school year begins, streets and sidewalks near schools become busier with students, parents, and staff. Whether walking, biking, or driving, it’s important to know and follow traffic safety rules to keep everyone safe. School zones are designed to protect children, but that safety depends on all of us staying alert and following the rules.

Safety Rules for Students and Pedestrians

  • Use Designated Crosswalks: Always cross the street at marked crosswalks and follow the directions of crossing guards.
  • Stay on sidewalks: Walk on sidewalks whenever possible. If there’s no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and stay as far from vehicles as you can.
  • Pay Attention: Keep your eyes up and avoid distractions like phones or headphones when crossing streets.

Safety Rules for Drivers in School Zones

  • Obey school zone speed limit: Many school zones have reduced speed limits during drop-off and pick-up times. Always slow down when lights are flashing.
  • Watch for pedestrians and cyclists: Children may cross unexpectedly. Be prepared to stop at all times.
  • Never pass a stopped school bus: It is illegal to pass a school bus with its stop arm extended and lights flashing, regardless of the direction you’re traveling.
  • Avoid distractions: Keep both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Even a moment of inattention can lead to an accident.

Working Together for Safer School Zones

Safety in school zones is a shared responsibility. Parents can help by talking to their children about traffic rules, setting safe walking routes, and being good examples behind the wheel. Drivers can protect lives by slowing down, staying alert, and yielding to pedestrians.
