Celebrate America Safely this July 4th
The Fourth of July is one of America’s favorite holidays. With fireworks filling the sky, backyard barbecues, and trips to the beach or family gatherings, it’s a day that brings everyone together to celebrate freedom and summer. But while we’re busy having fun, there’s something else that often comes with all the festivities: a major spike in traffic (and traffic accidents)
Why is Traffic Crazy on July 4th?
July 4th is one of the most busiest travel days of the year. More cars on the road means a greater chance for accidents. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, thousands of crash happen every Fourth of July weekend. Not only are there more people on the move but the parties and gatherings usually include alcohol, which means more impaired drivers on the road.
Tips for a Safe and Fun Independence Day
- Plan Ahead: Leave early and check for any road closures of detours. Have a designated drive if you know there’ll be drinks involved, or use a rideshare service.
- Be Extra Cautious at Night: A lot of activities happen after dark. Keep an eye out for pedestrians, cyclists, and even kids chasing fireworks. Slow down and stay alert
- Don’t Mix Fireworks and Driving: Setting off fireworks in random places or out of vehicle windows is both illegal and seriously dangerous.
- Buckle up: No matter how short the drive is, make sure everyone in the car is wearing their seatbelt.
- Limit Distractions: Keep your eyes up and phone down until you’re parked. It’s tempting to snap a quick photo of the fireworks or text your friends on the road.
Celebrating Smart Means More Fun
At the end of the day, the Fourth of July is about Freedom, and part of that is the freedom to celebrate responsibly. By taking extra precautions, you can enjoy the hot dogs, fireworks, and festivities without any unwanted problems.
Happy Fourth, and drive safe!
